This is the first book in a thrilling adventure series by Enid Blyton. In this book four children Jack, Lucy-Ann, Philip, Dinah and their pet parrot Kiki have a breathtaking adventure together. Jack, Lucy-Ann and Philip decide to run away from their cram school, where they are spending the summer, to Craggy Tops which is the home of Philip and Dinah’s aunt and uncle. Philip and Dinah’s aunt is reluctant in the beginning, but she agrees to keep Jack and Lucy-Ann when their uncle provides a generous amount of money for their stay. The children discover a mysterious looking island named the ‘Isle Of Gloom’ from their bedroom window and they decide to explore it. While lazing around on the beach one day, they befriend a birdwatcher named Bill Smugs. Bill Smugs has a boat and he teaches the children how to navigate it. After learning how to control the boat, the children ‘borrow’ their male housekeeper, Joe’s boat. On the island, they discover some strange mines and empty tins of food which makes them suspicious. They decide to visit again and explore it more thoroughly. However during their next trip the children are captured by some evil men who are involved in counterfeiting money. Philip, Dinah and Lucy-Ann manage to escape but Jack gets left behind. While Philip confides in Bill Smugs and asks him for help, Lucy-Ann and Dinah make an exciting discovery which will help them reach the island in an easier manner. They manage to rescue Jack, but Kiki the parrot gets captured. When they go and try to find Kiki, they all get captured! The criminals are done with their work in the mines and they decide to flood them. Thankfully, the boys and Bill Smugs plan a miraculous escape and manage to catch the criminals with a little help from Bill’s colleagues. Finally, all is well that ends well! This is the first of the ‘Adventure Series’ by Enid Blyton and we can’t wait to share the rest of the books here as well. Hope you enjoyed reading this review.
